Alan “Fluff” Freeman’s Rock Shows

iconIf, like me, you grew up in your musically formative years listening to this programme then you are in for a treat! Quality music throughout, the big bonus was that it focused almost exclusively on album tracks and replays of the classic BBC Archive sessions from ‘In Concert’, ‘Sounds of the Seventies’, and ‘Nightrider’ – the kind of stuff that you wouldn’t generally hear on standard radio output. In fact it was very much an OGWT of the radio. And it was most definitely where I developed my love for many of the bands that I would never have had the chance to hear otherwise.

It coincided with a time when I spent every other Saturday afternoon at football, but on the ‘off-days’ I made a point of tuning into “Fluff” Freeman on Radio 1 and was always glued to the music. I clearly remember recording ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ by Greenslade, ‘Heaven and Hell Part 1’ by Vangelis, and ‘The Four Horsemen’ by Aphrodite’s Child to name but three tracks, and I still had those cassettes until only a few years ago. Yes, there was the odd bit of reggae and soul chucked into the mix for good measure and, although I was never keen, it all added to the great afternoon’s offering.

And who can forget the iconic jingles/soundbites? They were quality snippets of, most notably, ‘Frankenstein’ by The Edgar Winter Group, ‘Welcome Back My Friends’ by ELP, ‘Long Live Rock’n’Roll’ by Rainbow, ‘Ello’, by Ian Hunter, and the many classical clips from Tchaikovsky, DvorakBizet, Rossini and Ravel to name but a few – iconic moments all. And then there were “Fluff'”s own interjections – “Greetings, music lovers!”, “And then…”, and “Not ‘arf!”IMG_20230331_162729And the good news is that, amazingly, many of them are still around! I’ve managed to link loads directly from this page (credit is due here to Fandom Wiki). The quality varies, some are incomplete, and one or two might be ‘time-bombed’ in that you can only listen to them a few times, but you still get to enjoy them at least once.

NB Most of these play easily via Mixcloud, Mediafire or YouTube. Those requiring Mooo Server need the username peel and password group.
