The ‘Lumen et Caligo I’ tour

Possible line-up: Max Hunt (keyboards, vocals) /Bob Leek (lead vocals, classical guitars) / Nick Beere (electric & acoustic guitars, back vocals, percussion) / Jason Tilbrook (bass, mandolins, & balalaika, dulcimer) / Tony Wells (drums, percussion)

I turned up for this Classic Rock Society gig expecting to see Manning as the support band but that was not to be as Tantalus were a late replacement, too late to be corrected on the ticket (see below).

“Tantalus is a UK prog band which comfortably fits into today’s British Symphonic Progressive movement; the band’s roots are very diverse, encompassing classic prog such as Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd across to the more jazz/art rock acts like Hatfield And The North, Weather Report and even elements of world music and modern psychedelic dance music.” Well, that’s what ProgArchives tells me anyway. Personally, I really can’t recall their performance so I am indebted to Rock Reviews website for confirming that this band did indeed play at the venue on  this occasion, with the author suitably impressed as he wrote, “Tantalus put in a good supporting performance and I’m tempted to see them again.” The official Greenslade website also confirms Tantalus’ presence in the Gig History section, but I can’t get it to open on my PC 😦

As ever, there is no confirmed setlist for this gig. In fact it’s one of only two gigs by the band listed on setlistfm.com, the other being two years later so it’s highly unlikely that we got the same songs at our gig. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the band were by now touring their third album ‘Lumen at Caligo I‘ which was released in 2002, so the music would have come from there and the two previous albums. In addition, the line-up above is based on the musicians who created that album but might very well not be the touring band.

Can anybody please tell me anything more about this performance?

The ‘Full Edition’ tour

Dave Greenslade (keyboards) / John Young (guitars, keyboards, vocals) / Tony Reeves (bass) / Tony Trotter (drums)

This was yet another Classic Rock Society gig; what a great loss those are now. I am indebted to Martin Hudson for bringing several superb prog acts almost to my doorstep, something that I really miss nowadays. But I digress…

This was the second time that I had seen the band in Rotherham, but this time I went with my mate Nigel Foale who was also a fan of the original band from long ago in the 1970s. The previous gig – still in Rotherham, but at a venue now closed – had been recorded and was available for the very first time tonight (as confirmed here) as a tribute to the fans and the venue, and the band were now touring again to promote it.

As before, the musicianship was superb and Young’s vocals hit the spot. All through the gig I was hoping against hope that we might just get something from the superb collaboration album of Dave Greenslade and Tony Robinson for Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels, something that I was heavily into back then, but I was to be slightly disappointed because it never happened . Not that I honestly expected that it would, but you always hope don’t you?

Sadly there is no setlist so I am guessing that they must have simply played all of the material that they had done before together with, perhaps, a few other golden oldies, I really just don’t know. What I do know is that Nigel was thrilled at having seen his old heroes once again and at having heard some of his favourites ‘live’ and we drove home listening to that new CD in the car. Bliss!
