Reading Festival - 1977, Wayne County & The Electric Chairs

Wayne County & The Electric Chairs: Sunday 28th August 1977, Reading Festival

Wayne CountyWayne County (vocals) / Greg van Cook (guitars) / Val Haller (bass) / J.J. Johnson (drums, percussion)

Probably the shortest set that I have ever seen. This gig is variously documented all over the internet as the fans took offence to Wayne – now Jayne – County effing and jeffing at them and then introducing songs with titles like “If You Don’t Want To Fuck Me Baby, Fuck Off” and the performance ended with the band being unceremoniously ‘canned’ off-stage as a barrage piss-filled beer cans together with clods of Reading’s finest mud were hurled at them.

Here’s an online account which backs up my memories to a tee.

Look North Fanzine’s review of the Wayne County set.

Legend has it that County announced that he was going straight home to write a song about it; whether he did or not I have no idea, but clearly the choice by an unknown promoter to play a proto-punk band at a rock festival filled with long-hairs in muddy ex-army greatcoats backfired sensationally.

In truth WC&TEC were not the first and certainly would not be the last act to encounter such opposition.

Setlist: Cream in My Jeans; Rad in Red; If You Don’t Want to Fuck Me Baby, Fuck Off; The Last Time
