This was the second time that I saw this band and, as on the first occasion two years earlier, it came at the Reading Festival. This time around the band had been promoted to the Sunday, but were no longer headliners.
There was no Amazonian Stacia performing exotic dances this time around, but other than that I really can’t remember anything else about the gig. On the other hand, if I had remembered something it would probably be for a bad reason so we’ll take it as read that the gig was a good ‘un.
I do remember having the ‘Astounding Stories‘ album on cassette and playing it while there was not a lot going on between bands, although I had primarily taken the cassette player to record The Enid on the Sunday. It’s certainly a good album though. That said, I am sure that Hawkwind were actually promoting the ‘Quark, Strangeness and Charm’ album which had been released a couple of months earlier in June. Indeed, they certainly played several tracks from it: the title track, ‘The Forge of Vulcan’, ‘Hassan I Sahba’, and ‘Damnation Alley’.
Setlist: Reefer Madness; Hassan I Sahba; The Forge of Vulcan; Brainstorm; Quark, Strangeness and Charm; Steppenwolf; High Rise; Robot; Spirit of the Age; Damnation Alley; Uncle Sam’s on Mars; The Iron Dream.
