The ‘Anvil Chorus’ tourHMK Anvil Chorus

Gary Holton (vocals) /

I remember travelling with mates in a cramped car for this gig with Neil Speight’s cousin Derek Stevenson becoming more and more frustrated by the second as he drove round and round in circles trying to find the location. Ahhh, the joys of driving without Sally SatNav telling one where to go!

Great band, though! By the time that I got around to seeing them they had shortened their name to just “The Kids” but everybody knew who they were. However, the knives were already out for them – you only have to read the advert below to see that. The music press didn’t like their loud, abrasive style although those same hacks would embrace everything punk within two years! Holton was on top form, goading the audience and encouraging them to be abusive throughout, laughing and shouting.

There are no setlists available for this gig so my guess would be that they played something akin to what they would do a couple of months later at Reading Festival, ie: Bogie Woogie; The Cops Are Coming; Rock and Roll Man; Squalliday Inn. Basically they had two albums to draw on by now and they would have played all the favourites from there, I suppose (including We Gotta Go and Blue-Eyed Boy).

I do know that we were well pleased with our visit and Derek found it much easier to get back on the A64 north than it had been when moving in the opposite direction!
