1975 MOTHER SUPERIOR Lady MadonnaThe ‘Lady Madonna’ tour

Another occasion when I know that I was there because it was a band with a weird name that had caught my attention. Of course, it also helped that the Penthouse advertising said that this was an “all chick rock band; totally raunchy”! It turns out that they were a London outfit which had been together since mid-1974 playing rock with a prog edge to it. They had even been on BBC TV on ‘It’s Cliff and Friends’ where they sang the CSN&Y hit ‘Love the One You’re With’ and also backed Cliff Richard himself on ‘Sweet Little Sixteen’! There are no setlists for the band but we can safely bet that they played all the songs on their only album, the 1975 ‘Lady Madonna’ which was only ever released in Sweden! And beyond that I really can’t tell you any more. I know that I enjoyed the band because they were different and they played rock well. I remember that we laughed a lot; it really wasn’t de rigeur for girl bands to play rock, so they were quite a novelty act. But they had won me over by the end of the night. You can check out their stuff by visiting the band’s website where members of the band have posted their reminiscences and  you’ll also find videos and recordings. The entire ‘Lady Madonna’ album can be found on YouTube too.

Setlist: unknown
